When you're first getting into lash extensions, there are many questions that you might have. Maybe you've even being doing lashes for a few years, and questions pop up that you can't seem to find the answer to. Not everyone has a mentor that they can ask, or they don't have the time to listen to a bunch of podcasts and other resources. Maybe the question you have is in an expensive digital course, and you just need a quick win!
We took inspiration from the Vogue Youtube series where they ask different celebrities 73 random questions. Our questions aren't random because we wanted to give you some lash value, but we did record it and post it on Youtube. If you don't feel like reading the questions and answers, watch the video:
If you're still here reading, let's get into the questions:
1. Are lash extensions bad for your natural lashes?
They can be if they are done improperly. If they are done correctly with the right isolation and the right weight, the lash extensions will not damage your natural lashes.
2. Why do I have bad retention with lash extensions?
The main reason a lash artist wouldn't have good lash extension retention could be because of not having a proper connection from the lash extension to the natural lash. Not getting your angles right with the bases and not using enough glue. Another thing could be the aftercare part of the service. If your client isn't and you aren't cleaning the lashes before the service, if there is any buildup or makeup on the natural lash, this could affect the retention as well. The proper weight is another thing to look at. If the extension is too heavy they could fall off prematurely.
3. Is megavolume too heavy?
It can be! I like to tell my students that if they do end up putting something too heavy on a client, you will know when they come back and have really bad retention. Those heavy lashes will most likely fall off prematurely, so you can always go a little lighter on the next set and see if that helps.
4. Are people really allergic to the lash extension adhesive?
Yes, most definitely. When someone is allergic to the adhesive they are actually allergic to the ingredient called Cyanoacrylate, which is the base of all the lash glues. Even if someone asks for a sensitive glue, they are still going to get this ingredient. If cyanoacrylate wasn't in the glues, it wouldn't work the way it needs to. The sensitive ones just have less amounts of the ingredient. If someone is allergic to it, they will be allergic to it either way.
5. What's the difference between russian volume and regular volume?
If you're going to do a true russian volume there are a lot of rules around it and its a very specific technique. Russian volume is always going to use .07 lashes, narrow fans, and perfectly symmetrical. If you're going to do regular volume it's going to be a little more forgiving. You can make medium or wider fans and you aren't stuck with just using .07 diameter lashes.
6. Does mascara hurt lash extensions?
YES!! Mascara has basic ingredients that will really throw your lash game off. Mascara has a waxy residue that coats the lash and it's super hard to get off. This could also be something that affects the retention. Another negative about using mascara on lash extensions is that it will close your volume fans and ruin all of that hard work!
7. What happens if you glue a lash extension to two natural lashes?
This is a matter of isolation which is the most important part of putting on eyelash extensions. What happens is that your little hairs grow in different stages, so if you glue a lash together with another lash - if one is shorter one could be in the growth stage and the other could be ready to fall off, so when the one one that is ready comes off, it will bring the smaller one with it.
